What Is Click Tracking?

Website click tracking is an act of generating reports on places where website visitors have clicked. It uses software that is able to identify and record where the website visitors have clicked on certain pages. You can do this by installing a code on your site.

Thereafter, whenever a user clicks anywhere on your website, be it on a link, a field, or a heading, it would send out a signal that the website click tracking tool will get and record. The tool will then generate a user-behaviour report for you on the basis of that information. These reports are useful because they can guide your decisions of redesigning your website and directing the audience to specific content by removing distractions.

Over time, click tracking can reveal audience behaviour trends that suggest which element of your website is the most engaging. Once you have identified the elements that attract your audience the most, you can capitalize on them.

Types Of Click Tracking

There are three major click tracking types that you can use for enhancing your website and making it more user-oriented. These include the following:

1. Website Click Tracking

Website click tracking tools record all user behaviours including mouse strokes, clicks, taps, and scrolls. Such click tracking also records sessions so you can view in real-time all that the user did when on your website; every click, every scroll, a moment of hesitation. This gives you qualitative data in addition to quantitative information on the number of clicks. This tool can provide great insight into user behaviours.

2. Email tracking

Email tracking tools let your track user behaviors after an email has been received. This gives you information about who opened the email you sent and what links did they click on.

3. Link Tracking

This is another key tool in online marketing. These tools record the number of clicks your website has received. This information can help you generate a list of users who appear interested in your content and then direct your search for a custom audience for paid ads.

How To Track Clicks On Your Website

There are a number of different tools you can use for click tracking but Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a popular choice so here is how you can track clicks on your website with GTM.

Step 1: Enable Click-Related Variables

Go to GTM Container Workspace, click on “Variables”. Then click on “Configure” and locate click-related variables. Enable all these variables.

Click on Variables-> Configure Google Tag Manager

Step 2: Start The Preview Mode For GTM

This will let you preview the software and you should be able to see the default “GA” tag fired.

Step 3: Create Click Triggers

To ensure that the tool accounts for all clicks, create triggers for everything you want to be recorded. This can include your website page, buttons, and in-page links.

Click on Trigger -> New Google Tag Manager

Step 4: Alter The Trigger So It Fires For The Specified Link Only

Visit the GTM Container Workspace once again and go to the link-click trigger that you just created. Then click on “Click – All Elements” and select the “Some Clicks” option. Here add the variable and associated value for the click.

Click on Click All Elements and Choose Some Clicks Google Tag Manager

Step 5: Test The Tag & Publish It

Once you have verified that your newly-created tag works just fine, leave the Preview Mode and publish the tag.

Click tracking tools are clever ways of tracking user activities and can be of great benefit for online marketing campaigns.
