How to Improve Mouse Accuracy
Mouse accuracy is the consistency between where you intend to click and where you actually click. Poor accuracy is almost never a hardware problem for mice costing over $20. It is almost always a settings problem, a technique problem, or both. This guide addresses each cause in order of impact.
Measure your starting accuracy with the Mouse Accuracy Test before making changes, so you can compare before and after.
Step 1: Disable Mouse Acceleration
Mouse acceleration is the most common hidden cause of poor accuracy. When acceleration is on, the cursor moves further when you move the mouse quickly than when you move it slowly at the same distance. This makes it impossible to build reliable muscle memory because the same physical movement produces different cursor movements depending on speed.
How to disable it in Windows: go to Settings, Bluetooth and devices, Mouse, Additional mouse settings, Pointer Options. Uncheck Enhance pointer precision. Click Apply. This is the single most impactful change for anyone with mouse acceleration currently on.
Step 2: Set the Right DPI
DPI that is too high makes precise clicking difficult because small physical movements produce large cursor jumps. DPI that is too low requires large sweeping movements for small cursor adjustments.
Starting point for gaming: 800 DPI. Starting point for office use on a standard 1080p monitor: 800 to 1200 DPI. Verify your current DPI and find your eDPI to understand where you are before changing anything.
Step 3: Use a Large Mousepad
A mousepad that is too small forces you to lift and reposition the mouse constantly, interrupting the smooth motion needed for accurate tracking. This has the same effect as raising DPI: you compensate for limited physical range with faster, less controlled movements.
Minimum size for gaming: 35 x 45 cm (approximately 14 x 18 inches). Larger is better. Desk-mat sized pads (90 x 40 cm) are widely used by competitive players. Cloth pads with medium texture give more control for precision tasks. Hard surface pads provide faster glide but less friction for stopping precisely on targets.
Step 4: Practice Arm Aiming
Most precision in mouse movement comes from the arm, not the wrist. Arm aiming uses the shoulder and elbow to drive large sweeping movements, with the wrist handling only small final adjustments. Wrist-only aiming at low DPI causes fatigue and inconsistency because the wrist's range of motion is limited.
To practice arm aiming: keep your elbow on the desk and move the mouse primarily from the elbow joint, not the wrist. The wrist floats above the pad rather than resting on it as a pivot.
Step 5: Use an Aim Trainer
The Aim Trainer provides clicking target practice in a browser. 10 to 15 minutes before a gaming session trains the specific motor patterns used for targeting, which translates directly to better accuracy in games.

Step 6: Check Your Chair and Desk Height
Inaccurate mouse use often comes from physical setup: if your arm is at an awkward angle, the natural range of motion is constrained and aiming feels forced. Check:
- Elbow height should be level with or slightly above the desk surface.
- The mouse should be reachable without extending your arm fully or hunching.
- Your forearm should rest comfortably on the desk surface when using the mouse.
Ergonomic setup improves accuracy and reduces fatigue, which compounds over long sessions.
Step 7: Clean the Mouse Sensor and Mousepad
A dirty sensor (dust or hair over the optical lens) causes tracking inaccuracies, particularly sudden jumps or skips during movement. Blow compressed air through the sensor opening on the underside of the mouse every 2 to 3 months.
A glossy, worn, or reflective mousepad confuses optical sensors and produces erratic tracking. Replace a heavily used cloth pad that has worn smooth.
