What Is Mouse DPI?
DPI stands for dots per inch. In the context of a computer mouse, it measures how many pixels the cursor moves on screen per inch the mouse physically moves on the desk. A mouse set to 800 DPI moves the cursor 800 pixels for every inch of physical movement. A mouse at 1600 DPI moves the cursor 1600 pixels for the same physical movement. Higher DPI means the cursor covers more screen distance per mouse movement - this is cursor speed, not precision. Mouse DPI does not inherently make aiming better.
What DPI Actually Changes

What Is eDPI?
eDPI is effective DPI: mouse DPI multiplied by the in-game sensitivity setting. It is a single number that represents your actual cursor speed, regardless of what combination of hardware DPI and in-game sensitivity produced it.
Two players can have identical eDPIs through different combinations:
- 800 DPI at 0.5 in-game sensitivity = eDPI 400
- 400 DPI at 1.0 in-game sensitivity = eDPI 400

What DPI Do Pro Gamers Use?
Professional FPS players across CS2, Valorant, and Apex Legends overwhelmingly use DPI in the 400 to 800 range. This is not brand loyalty or tradition. At these DPI settings, combined with lower in-game sensitivity, large arm movements produce large cursor movements, which gives more motor control over aiming precision.
Higher DPI with compensating lower sensitivity produces the same eDPI mathematically. However, very high DPI settings on some mice introduce sensor noise at the pixel level, while mainstream 400 to 800 DPI range is universally stable across all sensor types.

Does Higher DPI Make Your Mouse More Precise?
Not meaningfully. Modern gaming mice have sensors that are accurate at 400, 800, 1600, and 3200 DPI. The precision of the sensor hardware is excellent across this range. What changes is the cursor-to-movement ratio, not the accuracy of the sensor.
The marketing claim that 25,600 DPI is more precise than 1,600 DPI is not supported by how DPI works. You would need to move the mouse by a fraction of a millimeter to produce a single-pixel cursor movement at 25,600 DPI. No one uses this for gaming.
How to Change Your Mouse DPI
Method 1: Mouse companion software. Logitech G HUB, Razer Synapse, SteelSeries Engine, and equivalent apps all have DPI adjustment in their performance or pointer settings.
Method 2: DPI button on the mouse. Most gaming mice have a dedicated DPI cycle button (usually on the top or side). Each press cycles through preset DPI stages. Check your mouse's companion software to set which stages are active.
